11th Global Alba Truffle Auction

This year saw a 750gram (1 lb 10 oz) White Winter Truffle auctioned at the 11th global truffle auction in a small town near Alba called Grinzane Cavour. It sold for 100,000 euro's (£90,000). Due to these difficult economic times the price compared to the one sold at Alba's 9th truffle auction 2 years ago of the same size is about £12,000 less. But still a very good price.

An international auction was held in Rome last night where a 1Kg (2.2lb) white winter truffle (tuber magnatum pico) was sold for $200,000. Same as last year the casino mogul from Macau, Stanley Ho took proud possession of this large gem. Last year he won at auction a 1.5Kg truffle and paid $330,000.

Alba 10th Global Truffle Auction

Tough times being felt through the truffle world as well. Even when proceeds go to charity, it seems that people are not as generous as they have been in previous years, due to the global economic climate. The 10th Alba annual truffle auction this year was held in Tokyo and the truffle this year was 100 grams bigger than last years at 850 grams. Last years truffle went for $208,000 while this years truffle only went for $30,900.

The winning bidder was Kazumasa Terada, founder and president of a handbag retailer in Japan called Samantha Thavasa Japan Ltd.

As the title name suggests the White Winter Truffles that are being harvested at the moment are still quite small. The lack of rain currently isn't helping the white gems to increase in size. The current retail price this week is set at £4,224 /Kg for grade 1 truffles.

The Problem with the USA

For the past year we have been trying to solve an issue where our potential clientele in the USA have wanted to purchase fresh truffles from Europe, but have been put off by the fact the US government want to add on 100% duty to the invoice price. The duty being what they call the MFN tax rate. Not having any luck in emailing the 'United States International Trade Commission' I managed to get through to them via telephone after a couple of days. Their response to the MFN tax rate being 100%, was due to 'WTO Retaliatory Measures', as they put it. They were unable to explain the exact reason, but as a US resident you will have to pay the duty to your country to enjoy these wonderful delicacies. Maybe they should concentrate on more relevant issues in keeping the country solvent, than being petty and stopping the American people enjoying the delicacies that the world have to offer.

Poor Season for Italian Black truffles

Normally the season should continue until mid/end March however this year in Italy, the black winter truffles are far more scarce than usual and a lot more expensive. This was the same story we had for the white winter truffle season that closed in January this year. The feeling amongst the truffle hunters in Italy is that the black truffle season is already coming to an end.

The best quality black truffles are currently trading at £1,200/Kg.

The black winter truffle has also appeared over the past two weeks and its price is already increasing - currently at £1,000 per Kg.

A 1.5-kg white truffle found in the Italian countryside will be sold at a charity auction in Macau.
Truffle hunter Cristiano Savini displayed his precious find at a five-star hotel in Rome on Tuesday before it was flown to the Chinese enclave for Saturday's auction.
Cristiano's dog, Rocco, sniffed out the truffle, one of the biggest unearthed in the past 50 years, by an oak tree near Pisa last weekend, in an area of Tuscany where Cristiano and his father scout for truffles every year.
Ten years ago, they found a half-kilo white truffle by the same tree.
The truffle was 75 centimetres underground which is usual for the White Winter Truffle (tuber magnatum pico).

Cristiano said, "This is very unusual in truffle hunting - rather than digging down and narrowing towards the spot where the truffle was, we had to dig wider and wider, like in a reverse cone."

It took Cristiano and his father more than an hour to get the truffle out.

The family decided to donate the truffle to organisers of the Macau auction. "Even if the truffle is very much linked to trade and money, we took this one as a gift, a gift to us - me and my family," he said.
A truffle of half this size (750grams) was bought at the IXth Alba auction this year for £102,000.

Alba's 9th World Truffle Auction Results

On Sunday 11th November three Hong Kong property developers made the winning bid of US$210,000 (£102,000) for the prized white truffle which weighed in at 750 grams. Half the size of last years prized gem. This is obviously the effects of the extended dry weather that they have had in Italy this year.

The Truffle Market in Gubbio, Umbria

I thought I would be a bit different this year and try the truffle market of Gubbio in Umbria, instead of going to the famous town of Alba. As we all know the prices of fresh white truffles (tuber magnatum pico) this year are at their highest compared to prices we have seen over the past 10 years at least. As mentioned previously, the reason is due to the extended dry spell that they have had in Italy. Usually when you go to the truffle markets you see reasonably sized tuber magnatum's piled up high on most market stalls. This year there were very little on display in Gubbio and the tuber's that were being displayed averaged a size of about 20 - 30 grams.

I am still waiting to hear the results of the IXth Alba World Truffle Auction that was due to be held last Sunday. Last years record of 1.5 Kg that went for around £125,000 will prove very hard to beat.
The current retail price for the Tuber Magnatum is £4,140/Kg.

White Truffle Prices Finally Coming Down?

Finally we are starting to see the prices of fresh white truffles coming down to a more realistic price level in comparison to last years. As we all know this can change if the current harvested supplies are not maintained with new finds.

Some journalists are reporting that supplies of white truffles are down as much as 75% compared to last years harvest at this time. Lets hope that they find a large one for the 9th white truffle of Alba world auction on the 11th November - this weekend.
